Merry Christmas

We just finished our Christmas Eve service. It was so good to see everyone there. I am reminded, during times like this, how blessed we are to have such a great church family. I remember back in the old days when I was a State Legislator and I sent out about 7000 Christmas Cards every year. We would take pictures with all the kids and then I'd go to work with Photoshop to get everyone looking good. Still with all those pictures going out, there isn't near the fellowship we have with our church family. This year we didn't do any postcards (apologies) and yet many of you have thought of us through gifts and cards. We thank you from our hearts. We love you.

I pray you have a beautiful day this Christmas as you enjoy the Lord's goodness in your life. God bless you.

Paul asks the question in Romans 6, "Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?" Grigori Rasputin answered a resounding "YES!" Rasputin was born in Siberia in 1869. After tragedy killed his brother and sister in separate drowning incidents he became a monk in the Russian Orthodox Church.

Rasputin believed Divine grace came through repeated experiences of sin and repentance. In other words, he answered "yes" to Romans 6:1. He taught the more you sinned the more grace you got. He may have been influenced by the Khlysty cult. Khlysty ("whip") followers believed in both severe and indulgent treatment of the body or, as it turns out, self whipping and orgies. Sort of like a church of sado masichists. Rasputin was accused of being one of them but said he had no part with these weirdos. Whipping yourself? Get real.

He did like the sex part though. Rasputin preached and practiced religious perversion. He did what the Depeche Mode song (Strangelove) said years ago, "I give in to sin because I like to practice what I preach." He went so far as to say that public drunkenness was a virtue because it guarded a person against the sin of vanity. Who could have any pride waking up in a puddle of vomit?

A group of women collected around him and made up a sort of harem. But the free love buffet couldn't last forever nor be without consequence. Some ladies were devastated. Turns out he was a heartbreaker and a group of women formed a support group to recover from Rasputin heartache. One of these, a prostitute named Jina Guseva, who'd lived by his teaching and contracted syphilis tried to kill him. Full of bitterness she approached him one snowy day on the street and plunged a knifeblade into his stomach. Seeing his intestines hanging out she believed she was successful and yelled aloud, “I have killed the antichrist.” But Rasputin didn't die. He fled. She gave chase across the streets and into an alley where he smacked her in the face with a plank and a crowd intervened rescuing the monk.

He survived and continued to live on in excess, heaping up supposed grace through sex and drunkenness. One night he was finally murdered by his enemies (a long list), who poisoned him, shot him four times in the back and then threw him in the icy river Neva. Amazingly when they found his body there was water in the lungs which means he'd survived the poison and gunshots only to drown like his two siblings years before. He lives on in infamy by way of a jar of formaldehyde in a St Petersburg museum containing a certain body part of his. What a legacy?! His whole life he was wrong in his answer to the question, "Shall we continue in sin that grace might increase?" This pervert priest left a trail of disaster and lived a shallow broken life. In the end it earned him little more that the title "the mad monk."

Oh the madness

Mad cow disease? No. The people are going mad. What in the world is this picture about? That's what I thought when I saw it too. Then I read the caption: "A researcher adjusts a plastic tank on the back of a cow, in attempt to capture its gases for global warming research, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, July 4, 2008." Yeah, that's right. They are catching cow farts because they think flatulence is causing global warming. I told you about this years ago in a short snippet on global warming (one of our Genesis studies), but here is the proof that they are serious about it.

Now, I know the media is hammering the average Joe into into an earth worshipper by regularly telling us to "save the planet" and urging us to buy carbon credits. They'd have us all be pagan druids dancing around trees celebrating Gaia if they could but the facts are against them. Global warming, as they preach it, is a myth. I'll save that info for a more serious post, but right now, we have to have fun with this picture.

Now this photo deserves a "caption contest." If you've got a clever pun for a caption please post it in the comments for our enjoyment.

Man up!

I wrote this a while back and it was brought to my remembrance by this article:

Are there any men left? Sipping coffee the other day in our local climate controlled hyper mart I was struck with the young people. The girls are over developed early and young men are under developed and late. Why is our culture being emasculated? I recently read that men's testosterone levels have dramatically fallen over the past twenty years. I assumed that it could be from the hormone laced foods we eat, but I hadn't considered that it could be from birth control. Turns out that millions of women are excreting their birth control hormones into the environment and creating transgendered fish in our rivers. We are literally feminizing the planet.

We have long suspected the culture's feminization of men as a result of the feminist movement, but now we know how.

In today's world of the metro man (and I use the word "man" loosely), little hip hugger jeans and undersized t-shirts are the norm, but, "What saith the scriptures?" Does the Bible have anything to say about the boyish adults prancing around our shopping malls? Indeed. 1 Corinthians 6:9 tells us that the "effeminate" will not inherit the kingdom of God.

In the Bible, the word "effeminate" is from the Greek word "malakos." Literally it means "soft." It was a reference to the boi toys of that era, young men kept as sex pets for the elite. Jesus used the word malakos, when he praised John the Baptist (Mt 11:8) asking, "What did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed, those who wear soft clothing are in kings' houses." Caesar Nero had a malakos named Sporous whom he "married" with a full ceremony. Caesar in later life would play the malakos in another "marriage." It is interesting to note that 14 of the first 15 Roman Emperors were homosexual. Jesus was right. There were many "soft" men in king's houses, but John the Baptist was a real man, beard and all.

Ironically, the word malakos is where we get our word "emollient." Just up the alley for the metrosexual looking to soften his hands before browsing for the latest oversized sunglasses. Nothing is wrong with grooming, but excessive preening speaks of confused gender issues and gross selfism.

The legendary Narcissus was the original prince of primp. Interested only in pleasing his sexual desires he left a string of broken hearts to both sexes and even his own sister. He was cursed to love one who could never love him in return. He finally fell into a trance looking at his own reflection in a pool. In the same way, our culture is looking into a pool of vanity and we love what we see. The problem is that our gender bender world is rooted in selfishness and its warping our minds. Whether birth control pills in the water or the Emo femme at the mall, we live in a culture obsessed with ourselves. Sex without responsibility is warping our reality. We are gazing into a pool polluted by our own pride. The pool is vanity and the image we love so much will never love us back. Maybe it's time we went back to "does not even nature itself teach you."

Denying Self and Taking Up the Cross

This Sunday's message was back to basics as we covered the cost of discipleship. Jesus said, "I anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me." These are heavy words, but true. My message was serious at certain points, even harsh. Here is an excerpt:

Let me talk to the lukewarm believer. If this is you, be offended, if not, ignore it. I’m overwhelmed by the lives of churchgoers who live lukewarm, mediocre, tepid Christian lives (I use the word Christian loosely). They pursue their own goals, their own satisfaction, and their own pleasures. They never ever think of the glory of Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God. Their whole life is lived to please themselves and advance their own agenda. Their entire existence contradicts this definition of what a Christian is. They are diametrically opposed to the teachings and person of Christ, but because they put in 2 hours Sunday they call themselves Christians. And they wonder why they feel conflicted. They own a Bible. They read it. They try to live by it, but those things don’t make you a Christian. Hell is full of people who have read the Bible.

Let me tell you this because I love you. You’ve used religion like a drug. You’re drugged, you’re numb. You’re doped up on religion. You cook up faith in a dirty spoon, tie off your arm and shoot up with a religious syringe. You feel good about it but your life is not changed. You're religious but you’re not a Christian. You just got a faith fix.

Unless your life is dominated by Christ, you are not a Christian. Let me say that again in case you missed it. Unless your life is dominated by Christ, you are not a Christian. That is the definition of "Lord." Christianity is not a hobby, a pastime, a passion, or even a vocation. It is a life, a new life. If your Christianity isn’t all consuming then you’ve got the wrong thing…a bit of religion maybe, a weekend Jesus club, a friendly little society to be part of, but not soul-saving, heaven-granting, salvation-bearing Christianity.

We have to be careful that we don’t start believing the world’s definition of what a Christian is. We have to go back to Jesus definition of following Him is. It is the cross. It is the execution of our ego, of our identity of our own lives.

Christianity has not been tried and found wanting. It has not been tried. We’ve not really taken Him at His Word. Real Christianity has been replaced by a pat on the back and a “hang in there, it’ll get better.” We don’t see the power of God because we don’t really want it. We don't confront sin because we like sin. We don't deny self because we like our selves, we love our selves. We prefer to cope with the pain and scars that our sins bring, and then to embalm our suffering with platitudes and support groups (that’s what our religion has become).

We begin to exist in a formaldehyde of religious clichés and self help phrases. We’ve learned a bagful of gimmicks from the world because the modern brand of Christianity being pushed isn’t cutting it anymore. We need psychology and therapy to medicate our sin. We need mysticism and superstition to distract from loneliness. We need self coddling books numb our discomfort. Jesus says, "Die to self" but we didn't like that so we have mixed Jesus into a religious cocktail with other gurus, self-help programs, mysticism, a few good deeds, church attendance and a shallow tepid lukewarm faith. Then we wonder why He didn’t work. Well He does follow our prescriptions and won't jump through our hoops. He won’t share your affections with a bunch of other things.

He wants a vibrant, passionate faith that craves the holiness of God and the glory of Christ. Since this is not on the forefront of many so called "Christians" minds
, they experience no power, no love, no intimacy and no joy from God. In the end, much of what appears as Christianity is counterfeit, a weak substitute for the real thing.

It is not the explosive power of Christianity that has changed the world and altered the coarse of history. That Christianity, true Christianity, has power to dramatically change a life. That Jesus conquers addiction and liberates captives. Real Christianity is about the resurrection, NEW LIFE from the grave. Where deadness once was, God rips open the universe and breaks in with life. In the darkness of the human condition, His booming voice says “let there be light” and out of nothing, light pierces the darkness.

Confusion is shattered, clear thinking comes in clarity of thought crystallizes; love takes over where hate once ruled. Purity and innocence washes over a once vile and perverse mind. Joy and sweet peace begin to build the heart so distraught and torn down by anxiety. Stress has once robbed this soul of rest, but now an overwhelming immovable trust has come in which cannot be shaken. Love floods into that life, the love of God, so powerful the world cannot measure it. A person knows God’s love, they can feel it showering over them. Their life once a black hole, consuming other worlds in their selfishness, is now a garden producing and giving love out. They love their families. Their lives are changed.

This is Christianity, real Christianity—the cataclysmic, universal transformation of a soul; being born again, a relationship with God Almighty. A future, a plan and purposeful life, the power and dynamic of the Spirit of God guiding and leading….It all comes through death. This is the plan of God—death, denial of self, embracing the cross. Try Him in this thing. Abandon all other things and fall on Him totally. Be broken and become desperate for Him. Pay the cost of discipleship and you will not be disappointed.

It was hard to deliver this message. It never feels good to lay out Jesus words when they are hard. I have in mind all those in our church who love the Lord passionately and who are hurting from life's struggles. How I long to give them words of comfort and consolation, and yet I am called to preach and teach what Jesus tells me to. Praise the Lord that His word does not return void. It will do what He purposed for it. God bless you.

Random Stuff

We are showing the film "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed" this Saturday at SSCF. I hope you will bring you family and friends. Not only is it entertaining, this film exposes some serious dangers in the direction that academia is taking in the United States. Challenge your high minded liberal friends to come and if you aren't confident in your science I will be happy to debate them afterward.

The Murphys are heading back to CA. What a great family they are. They bring such joy to our fellowship. Brian and Caila are always faithful and Hudson is growing so fast. I think they have some news to share too, but I will leave that to them. Anyway, we'll miss them tons. Be sure to say goodbye when you see them in church this Sunday.

We got word the other day that our good friend has brain cancer. She started to do some strange things at work and have odd mental episodes. When she went in for a scan they found a tumor the size of a tennis ball. They tried to remove everything in the surgery but they arent too hopeful of a recovery and give her 9 months. She is a single mom with a 10 year old son. We believe in miracles and we believe in grace. The Lord will give her a healing and good years to come or the grace to face death and go into His presence. Either way it makes for a different sort of Christmas for her and a reminder to us to think about the needs of others this time of year.

Get your tickets for the Christmas Party. We have had a blast every year since we started as a church. We need a solid number though so please call the church and let us know if you'll be coming (808-395-7723).

Blog Withdrawl

I am in desperate need of blogging. Whew, ten days since my last post. Much is happening in our church life. It is so good to see the hand of the Lord moving in the people around us. I will try to recap the last week and look to some things we have coming up.

Our afterglow was awesome last night. For those that don't know what an after glow is, we have taken a word from the experience of Moses at Mt Sinai (Exodus 33) where he asked to see God's glory (probably the greatest prayer we can pray along with Peter's three word plea, "Lord save me"). God told Moses that no man could see His face and live but He would put Moses in a cleft of the Rock, cover him with His hand and pass by. Lifting His hand Moses would see the afterglow of the LORD. The shining was so great that even Moses' face glowed when he went to the people. Aside from the beautiful picture we covered in our Exodus study (The pierced Rock, that giant hand over the puncture in which Moses hid is a picture of Jesus pierced hands. We see the glory of God in the wounds of Christ where we hide. Oooooh, its a good study and you can pick it up for free at church. Ask Brandon for it.) But, I digress. Our afterglow is a time of waiting on the Lord and looking to the moving of the Spirit in the gifts. We worship, pray, prophecy and speak in tongues. We lay hands of folks for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes we just worship and sometimes we see amazing things. Sunday night was sweet. We ministered to the Lord and people were blessed. One thing that I was blown away by was a word from the Lord from Faye Hwang for Lance Brug. Back story: the Brugs moved to Oregon a couple years ago but want to move back. They are so up in the air about it though. Lance wants to follow the Lord's will and be able to pay for everything (they have 4 kids). There are questions. Will there be work? If God led us there, how do we know He is leading us back? Kim has been amazing as a mom and wife, trusting God and allowing Lance to hear from the Lord on the direction for their family. Still, what they should do has been weighing heavily on him. After we were done with service Faye approached Lance. I was nearby so she asked me to listen as she presented to Lance what God had put on her heart for him. She didn't know him or his situation at all, but said, "God is going to bring you back. You just need to wait on the Lord." I was blown away, but at first I thought she had some information about them and was being encouraging. I said, "Do you know Lance and Kim's situation." She looked quizzically at me, "Lance?" she asked. She didn't have any idea. It was a genuine word from God into their lives and a total shocker for Lance. Faye left quickly to catch up with her husband Jason and pick up their kids and Lance just sat down and gazed forward. Tears began to stream down his face as he realized what had just happened. God had spoken into his life direction, assurance and comfort. Isn't the Lord great?!
